Alicia Acevedo Carranza's story is a familiar one, almost iconic: she came to America in search of a better life. Her journey took her all the way from Teziutlan, Puebla, Mexico, to the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Her search for a better life came to a bitter end in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Little public information on Alicia Acevedo Carranza exists; the image above is from a tribute made by a volunteer who never met her. But the life of a Central American immigrant in America is not an easy one, and I imagine that Alicia Acevedo Carranza continued to nurture the dreams and aspirations that brought her from Mexico while developing the industriousness and mental toughness necessary for day-to-day life in New York.
I am sorry that Alicia never had the opportunity to make the better life that she sought. In her death, she has become a full participant in American civic life, a part of our shared history forever.
Que descansas en los brazos de dios.
